Анотация
"Between 1982 and 2006 the New York City Department of Transportation received reports of bridge-related potential hazards undergoing all phases typical of crises, including a mild increase, an exponential expansion, an extended peak, and a gradual decline converging to a higher but manageable level. That sequence is examined as typical of an extreme event, in this
case revealing the divergent restraints and constraints of supply and demand governing engineering and economics. The development is compared to the instability of conservative mechanical systems. Robustness and resilience are defined as essential descriptors of the sustainability supplied by a transportation network and demanded by a functioning economy."
